Sri Krishna Janmashtami Festival – Advent of Supreme Personality of Godhead, Sri Krishna

Why The Supreme Lord Appears on Earth?

janma karma ca me divyam
evaṁ yo vetti tattvataḥ
tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma
naiti mām eti so ’rjuna
- (Bhagavad Gita 4.9)

Lord Kṛṣṇa explains in the Bhagavad Gita that there is no reason for Him to come to this material world which is anything like the reason we (ordinary living beings) take birth, karmana daiva netrena, that according to our previous karma we are forced by the law of nature to enter into a particular womb within the 8,400,000 species of life within creation, we take birth as a product of our own previous karma and after we take birth we have to accept a variety of pains and pleasures according to our previous karma and according to the karma that we are creating today, we will have to enjoy or suffer those material reactions tomorrow. The Lord appears in this world , millennium after millennium, for the purpose of reclaiming the souls who have left His divine loving service to try to make some comfortable happy arrangement in the world of birth and death.

yadā yadā hi dharmasya
glānir bhavati bhārata
abhyutthānam adharmasya
tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham
- (Bhagavad Gita 4.7)

yoginām api sarveṣāṁ
mad-gatenāntar-ātmanā
śraddhāvān bhajate yo māṁ
sa me yukta-tamo mataḥ
-(Bhagavad Gita 6.47)

When the Lord descends into this world, He does not descend in the intimate association of various mystic yogis and wealthy practitioners of the karma-kanda, but He appears amongst His devotees. Kṛṣṇa appeared in the beautiful four-armed form of Narayan, as the Lord of Vaikuntha, the majestic king of all the creation but on the request of Devaki, His mother, He changed His form to that which appeared like an ordinary baby form and upon His request Vasudev, His father, brought Him on that very night across the currents of the river Yamuna to the holy land of the Vraja Bhumi and there the highest spiritual ecstasies and the deepest realizations in all the Vedas were revealed to us.

The supreme perfection of yoga is to enter into an eternal loving relationship with the Lord. Lord Sri Kṛṣṇa explains the very purpose for which the Lord descends in this world- to revive the lost relationship that we have with Him. He explains that this science of self realization in which we are meant to understand our relationship with the supreme is a great mystery. And one who accepts a humble position can understand this mystery.

From the moment Krishna appeared in the material existence on this day of Janmashtami, through all of his pastimes and wonderful histories, He's beckoning us to come join Him in His eternal realm.
